One of two Instructor Endorsements within the American Canoe Association (ACA) Universal Paddling Program, Adaptive Paddling Workshops (APWs) provide the information necessary to seamlessly integrate individuals with physical disabilities into outdoor recreation programs in the context of paddlesports. This ACA credentialing program is truly the gold standard accreditation for adaptive paddlesports instruction.

APWs focus on five key topics: (1) Language, Etiquette and Interaction, (2) The Legal Context, (3) Cultivating Seamless Integration, (4) Adaptive Outfitting Concepts & Goals, and (5) Mechanics of Adaptive Outfitting for Paddlesports. APWs involve hands-on learning in a classroom and in calm, protected waters.

On the final day of the APW, newly trained instructors will work with participants with physical disabilities resulting from SCI to design and build adaptive seating and other adaptive outfitting into kayaks or SUP that enable participants with physical disabilities to paddle with greater comfort, safety, and performance potential. During the second half of the day, we will paddle together in the pool and test how well each design and build works on the water. It is a very fun day!
